Winona Laura Horowitz professionally known by the name Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. Her parents, Winona Ryder's parents, chose her name after her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother was both an author as well as editors. Ryder's father was born into an ethnically Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. Ryder is the youngest sister of Uria who is half-sister to Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder was born in the United States and moved with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. Here, they did not have electricity. Ryder was an avid bookworm and would spend her days reading books as she had no television. Ryder was enrolled in acting classes when Ryder was twelve years old, in the American Conservatory Theatre. Lucas was released in 1986. Ryder, who was barely 15 years old, landed a role as a leading actor. Ryder faced bullying during her high school years. She thought that by becoming an actor her behaviour would be changed. However, that didn't happen. It didn't stop her from following her dreams. Her breakthrough came with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in the year 1988. Ryder was later cast in numerous roles that were successful. In 1993, she received an Academy Award to be awarded for The Age of Innocence.
